The
nMRCGP is the GP licensing examination, which has been
designed to test the GP curriculum. The curriculum is
huge but as explained in the section ‘About the nMRCGP’ it has been translated into a number of
competencies that can be observed and assessed.
Learning the competencies for the nMRCGP
These
competencies form the backbone of the exam and in
‘Becoming a GP’ they are all explained in detail. Understanding these
behaviours is the key to performing well enough to
pass the exam.
The
contents section shows that each of the 12 nMRCGP
competency areas has a chapter of its own.
In each
chapter, the areas of performance are shown in large
arrows that show the direction of development during
training. This makes it very easy for you to see where
you are now and where you need to be.
The
text explains each of the competencies very clearly in
practical terms that relate to the job of being a
GP. It also describes what you need to do
and how you might go about improving your performance.
What
are the assessors looking for?
In addition to the main
text, each chapter has numerous awareness-raising boxes
that are designed to expand upon the text, make
connections and improve your understanding of the
standard you need to reach for the nMRCGP.
These boxes are of various
types that ask questions, give tips and make comments
about learning. In addition, there are many boxes (labelled
‘Assessors Corner’) that describe
what assessors and examiners are looking for.

How well am I doing? What do I need to
learn?
Based
on the nMRCGP framework, the book contains 4 performance
screening forms which between them cover the whole
framework.

These
can be used repeatedly by trainees and also by educators
to gauge how well trainees are doing and which areas of
performance to target
in future learning plans.
